Our Approach
When the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) launched its Container Deposit Scheme in 2018, Return-It was tasked with building a modern, community-friendly system capable of processing millions of beverage containers while ensuring transparency, accessibility, and operational efficiency. Core challenges included fragmented return workflows, the need for real-time tracking, digital refund integration, and scalable infrastructure across urban and regional areas.
LT3 DRS played a pivotal role in addressing these challenges, delivering a unified platform for container validation, refund reconciliation, digital wallet integration, and return site operations. Through support for multiple return formats, including reverse vending machines, staffed depots, and Drop & Go pods, LT3 enabled Return-It to streamline user experiences and ensure full traceability across the network.
The Result
Since deploying LT3 DRS, Return-It ACT has helped drive one of Australia’s most successful CDS implementations. More than 650 million containers have been returned through the system, with redemption rates reaching 68% and community support consistently exceeding 90%. The system’s modular design enabled seamless reporting, accurate real-time reconciliation, and automated compliance tracking-essential to regulatory oversight and public accountability. Digital integrations have enhanced refund convenience and enabled efficient donation routing for charities. With its scalable architecture and robust data foundation, LT3 DRS continues to support ACT’s growing infrastructure and evolving circular economy goals.
